10 Contact teaching days over 10 months in our unique US teaching clinic

We have partnered with the Health Sciences University (HSU) in London, to develop this unique mentorship programme to provide an exceptional learning opportunity in MSK ultrasound imaging. The programme is structured to work as a stand-alone learning programme or to complement an existing pathway such as our Post Graduate Certificate in MSKUS.

The course involves 10 contact days over 10 months in the ultrasound teaching clinic, under close supervision of our expert tutors.

This complements the clinical skills component of the Post-Graduate Certificate to help students achieve their assisted and unassisted scans. Participants will maintain an “Ultrasound Logbook'' documenting their scans, whether assisted or unassisted, while under the guidance of our tutors. The Logbook is a key component for clinicians to prove their competency in MSK Ultrasound.

This is a fantastic way to develop your skills and gain experience scanning patients (under supervision) in a clinical setting.

Key features

  • Patient clinic: Scanning real patients under close supervision will quickly develop your scanning skills and your ability to identify pathology and write accurate ultrasound reports.
  • One-to-one feedback from expert clinicians in MSK Ultrasound.
  • Our tutors (who are physiotherapists, sports medicine consultants and sonographers) have extensive experience in helping clinicians develop the skills and knowledge required to implement MSK ultrasound into their clinical practice.
  • Excellent tutor to student ratio. Places are strictly limited to ensure close expert supervision and scanning time.
  • One machine to two students. Only high-specification machines are used. Participants are welcome to use their own portable machines if they wish.
  • Access to our online resources including key articles, learning resources, online presentations and quizzes.
  • Each month we focus on a specific anatomical region.

Book early to avoid disappointment. Places are strictly limited to 12 delegates per cohort to ensure close expert supervision and scanning time.

Who should attend
This course is designed for those enrolled on our PGCert MSK US (Sports Doctors, Physiotherapists, Surgeons, GPs with a special interest in MSK/Sports Medicine, MSK Radiologists, Sports Medicine Consultants, Rheumatologists, Sonographers, Osteopaths and Podiatrists).

What to expect on the teaching days

  • Scanning workshops which focus on a specific area (e.g shoulder, elbow).
  • Patient clinic: Typically, 2 students to 1 patient with 1 supervisor.

Course pre-requisites

  • Being registered on the SMUG PGCert MSK US course 2024-25. This course is specifically designed to complement the clinical based part of the PGCert MSK US. If you are new to scanning, you are encouraged to attend a 2-day Introduction to MSK US imaging course prior to the Mentorship PRO.
  • You must have access to an ultrasound scanner so you can practise between contact teaching days.
  • You must have good MSK anatomical and pathological knowledge.
