FAQs

General

Are SMUG courses endorsed by The College of Radiographers?

Yes, our Introduction to MSK Ultrasound Imaging, Advanced Ultrasound Imaging and Cadaveric Ultrasound Guided MSK Injections courses are endorsed by The College of Radiographers.

What competency pathways does SMUG offer?

Our unique Mentorship Programme leads to a high level of competency but does not provide certification.
The PGCert in MSK US provides certification of competency, when successfully completed. Combining our Mentorship Programme and PGCert in MSK US courses is a popular pathway.
Our Introduction, Advanced, Cadaveric Guided Injection and on-site courses are highly practical and will develop your MSK scanning skills, complement your competency pathways and provide CPD.

Do SMUG run courses specific to emergency medicine to identify DVT etc.?

No, our courses are purely sports medicine orientated and as such do not cover DVT screening or application in an A&E department.

Do we include scanning hernias and ‘lumps & bumps’?

No, our courses are purely sports medicine orientated.

My company is looking at purchasing an ultrasound scanner - any suggestions or things to look for?

There are many factors to consider when purchasing a scanner. Many portable machines provide a good quality image. Look for multi-frequency probes (5-12 MHz or higher), sensitive Power and colour Doppler and most important of course, is good, clear images. Ask the representative to demonstrate a system in your clinic and preferably compare several systems at the same time! See our website resources page for further detailed information and blogs for top tips.

Can I use a hand-held scanner for MSK ultrasound?

The course gives you the practical skills, but it takes a lot more training to get familiar with the spectrum of normal anatomy appearance, trauma, pathology and clinical interpretation, before ultrasound can be combined with your clinical examination. Practise your skills on patients with their consent, do not use it immediately as a clinical skill.

What is your cancellation policy?

Less than 28 days notice = No refund
29 to 56 days notice = 50% refund
Over 57 days notice = Full refund, less an administrative charge of 4% of the course fee

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes. Please email us at info@ultrasoundtraining.co.uk.

What are the prerequisites for the Introduction to MSK US course?

Participants should have good anatomical knowledge (especially cross-sectional) and clinical experience, and ultrasound imaging should fall within your scope of practice.

How does the SMUG Introduction to MSK US course differ from other courses?

Designed by some of the most experienced MSK ultrasound clinicians, it is an intensive, interactive, highly practical, and closely supervised course. We have over 10 years of experience, successfully teaching this course to clinicians in the UK and abroad. It provides a solid grounding in tissue recognition and scanning skills, as well as giving clinicians a clear idea of the skill level required and the time it takes to be competent and confident.

I only want to know how to scan a particular area (shoulder, muscle, ankle). Is the Introduction to MSK US course for me?

Yes, any scanning requires the skill to optimise the image using the machine settings and the correct manual skill to assess the tissues of interest, as well as the knowledge of how to avoid pitfalls.

Do I get a qualification or certificate at the end of the Introduction to MSK US course?

You will receive a Certificate of Attendance for the allocated CPD hours for the course, not a certificate of competence.

How do I continue to develop my skills after the Introduction to MSK US course?

Attend our Advanced course or join our unique Mentorship Programme. Our PGCert in MSK US provides certification on successful completion. Combining our Mentorship Programme and PGCert in MSK US courses is a popular pathway.

Will I be able to scan my patients after the Introduction to MSK US course?

The course gives you the practical skills, but it takes a lot more training to get familiar with the spectrum of normal anatomy appearance, trauma, pathology, and clinical interpretation, before ultrasound can be combined with your clinical examination. Practise your skills on patients with their consent, do not use it immediately as a clinical skill.

Advanced course

What are the prerequisites for the Advanced course?

Participants have ideally attended an introductory (Level 1) course, are expected to have regular access to an ultrasound scanner, are using ultrasound scanning as part of their daily practice, have completed at least 10 documented scans and are competent at identifying the normal appearance of most assessed structures in MSK ultrasound.

Do I get a qualification/certificate at the end of the Advanced course?

You will receive a Certificate of Attendance for the allocated CPD hours for the course, not a certificate of competence.

Advanced course

Is the PGCert in MSK US CASE accredited?

No, not yet.

I do not have a clinical supervisor. Do SMUG provide a clinical supervisor for this course?

If you join our Mentorship Programme, the tutors will provide supervision during the course, and they will be able to assist you with the supervised component of your logbook requirements. This does not however replace the requirement for you to have a Clinical Supervisor in your clinical setting.

I don’t have access to a scanner, can I apply for this course?

If you do not have regular access to a scanner, you will not be able to enrol on this course.

I only scan shoulders, do I have to do the full PGCert in MSK US programme?

If you do not have regular access to a scanner, you will not be able to enrol on this course.

Cadaveric MSK US Guided Injection course

I am already injecting and only want to know how to inject under US guidance. Is the Introduction to MSK US course necessary?

Yes, to identify the correct target area, you need the scanning skills to visualise the needle and perform the procedure correctly.

Do I get a qualification/certificate at the end of the Cadaveric Ultrasound Guided MSK Injection course?

You will receive a Certificate of Attendance for the allocated CPD hours for the course, not a certificate of competence.

I just want to do ultrasound guided shoulder injections, is the Cadaveric Ultrasound Guided MSK Injection course for me?

Yes. We have a two-day cadaveric injection course (one upper limb and one lower limb day). If you wish to attend only the upper or lower limb day, please email info@ultrasoundtraining.co.uk (this cannot be booked online).
We also run joint/area-specific courses (shoulder, foot/ankle).

Mentorship Programme

Why should I attend this course?

This unique course provides a pathway to competency through closely supervised practical workshops and a supervised patient clinic. You must produce a logbook of supervised and unsupervised scans and be competent in report-writing. There is a practical exam at the end of the 6-month period. The number of students is limited to 12 optimise the learning experience.

I am also doing a PGCert in MSK Ultrasound. Can the supervised scans from the Mentorship Programme count towards the supervised scans for the PGCert logbook?

Do I get a qualification/certificate at the end of the Mentorship Programme?

No. If you have successfully completed the programme, you will receive a certificate confirming this, but this is not a certificate of competence.

On-site training

Can SMUG provide a course in my clinic/department?

Yes, we regularly provide on-site introductory, advanced and tailored courses, and supervised scanning. If you would like further details email francesca@ultrasoundtraining.co.uk with an outline of your requirements.

We would like to have on-site training, but we do not have any MSK ultrasound machines.

We have a close (non-commercial) relationship with GE Healthcare, and we are typically able to arrange scanning systems for your on-site training.

Can SMUG tailor a training course to our specific areas of interest/level of scanning experience?

We have many years of experience tailoring ultrasound training courses to specific clinical settings/requirements. So, if you only scan shoulders or hips, or are a team of multidisciplinary clinicians, please email francesca@ultrasoundtraining.co.uk. Together we will plan your tailored training, to optimise your learning experience.
