This unique, highly practical introduction to diagnostic ultrasound and ultrasound guided injections of the Foot and Ankle is specifically developed for podiatrists, physiotherapists, sports physicians and foot and ankle surgeons. This course is designed for beginners to diagnostic ultrasound and ultrasound guided injection skills and to those looking to further develop and refine their skills. The course is taught in small groups with high end ultrasound machines, under the close supervision of our expert tutors, tailored to your individual level of competency.

Day 1 - Introduction to diagnostic ultrasound of the Foot & Ankle

Day 1 focuses on developing the skills and knowledge required to carry out a diagnostic ultrasound of the foot and ankle. Scanning will be in small groups, under close supervision. You will have access to our extensive online course resources.Delegates scan in groups of 2/3 (one machine to 2/3 delegates) and one tutor to 4-6 delegates.

Day 2 - Introduction to ultrasound guided injections of the Foot & Ankle

Day 2 focuses on the skills and knowledge required to carry out ultrasound guided injections of the Foot & Ankle. This day is designed for those new to ultrasound guided injections, or those looking to refine their skills and increase the injection repertoire. All ultrasound guided injections around the foot and ankle will be covered (the knee can be covered on request). See course ‘Timetable’ below for a full list of injections covered. We will teach you how to scan each region, and the easiest and most effective way of carrying out these USG injections. You will benefit from close supervision from our expert tutors, who have lots of top tips to ensure you get the most out of the course.

Meat specimens and phantoms will be utilised to assist skill acquisition.

Depending on availability you may be able to book one day only. Please email info@ultrasoundtrainign.co.uk to discuss the one day option further.

Who should attend?

This programme attracts podiatrists, foot and ankle consultants and physiotherapists, sports medicine doctors, GP’s, rheumatologists, radiologists and sonographers looking to expand their skills around the foot and ankle.

Learning Objectives

Day 1: Introduction to Musculoskeletal Ultrasound of the Foot and Ankle Learning Objectives:

1/ Understanding Ultrasound Fundamentals: Define basic ultrasound principles, including how the machine works, artefacts, machine parameters, image optimisation and prob skills and orientation.

2/ Hands-On Scanning Techniques: Develop proficiency in proper scanning techniques for MSK ultrasound (normal anatomy): Demonstrate the ability to optimise image quality and resolution during scanning

3/ MSK Normal Anatomy and Pathology Recognition: Identify and describe key musculoskeletal structures of the foot and ankle. Develop awareness of common pathologies in the foot and ankle through ultrasound imaging.

4/ Discuss the clinical applications of MSK ultrasound in podiatric practice: Analyse case studies to understand how MSK ultrasound aids in diagnosing and managing foot and ankle conditions.

5/ Scope of practice and competency in MSK Ultrasound: Identify and understand the scope of practice, competency, training and medico-legal issues.

Day 2: Ultrasound-Guided Injections of the Foot and Ankle Learning Objectives:

1/ Understand the role of ultrasound in guiding interventions in podiatry. Develop knowledge in in-plane and out of plane guided ultrasound techniques.

2/ Practical Techniques for USGI: Gain hands-on experience of guiding needles under ultrasound on meat specimens and phantoms. Develop confidence in obtaining the correct ultrasound image of the injection target for each injection.

3/ Complications and Safety Considerations: Develop awareness of procedural protocols and strategies to mitigate risks during procedures, to successfully and safely integrate ultrasound guided injection into clinical practice.

4/ Apply learned skills in a realistic cadaveric lab setting. Engage in hands-on exercises with realistic case scenarios, receiving individualised feedback from our expert tutors for common foot and ankle guided procedures.

5. Scope of practice and competency in ultrasound guided procedures: Identify and understand scope of practice, competency, training and medico-legal issues.
