Introduction to Ultrasound-Guided Injections of the Foot & Ankle

This intensive one-day practical course is designed to develop the essential skills and knowledge needed to perform ultrasound-guided injections of the foot and ankle. It is ideal for healthcare professionals who are new to these techniques or those wishing to refine their skills and broaden their injection repertoire.

The entire course takes place in a state-of-the-art cadaveric lab within the medical school, giving delegates the opportunity to learn and practise in a highly realistic setting from the outset. Teaching will cover core injection techniques — including in-plane, out-of-plane, and ‘drop-down’ approaches — alongside practical tips for optimising image quality, needle visualisation, and effective integration of guided injections into clinical practice. Key topics such as equipment setup and medico-legal considerations are also addressed.

Delegates will gain hands-on experience scanning and identifying normal sono-anatomy, locating injection targets across all regions of the ankle and foot (anterior, posterior, lateral, medial, midfoot, and forefoot), and practising setup for guided procedures. The cadaveric format provides unparalleled practical exposure, with ample time to refine skills under the close supervision of expert tutors. High-quality cadavers and ultrasound machines ensure a rich learning experience, with plenty of opportunity for individual feedback and guidance.

A full timetable of injections covered is available in the Timetable tab below.

Who should attend?

This programme is ideal for podiatrists, foot and ankle consultants, physiotherapists, sports medicine doctors, GPs, rheumatologists, radiologists, and sonographers looking to expand their skills in the foot and ankle region.

Learning Objectives

Ultrasound-Guided Injections of the Foot and Ankle Learning Objectives:

1/ Understand the role of ultrasound in guiding interventions in the foot and ankle, and develop knowledge of in-plane, out-of-plane, and 'drop-down’ guided techniques.

2/ Gain hands-on experience guiding needles under ultrasound on fresh frozen full-bodied cadavers under close supervision from expert tutors.

3/ Develop awareness of procedural protocols, safety considerations, and strategies to mitigate risks during procedures, ensuring successful and safe integration of ultrasound-guided injections into clinical practice.

4/ Apply learned skills in a realistic cadaveric lab setting. Participate in hands-on exercises based on realistic case scenarios and receive individualised feedback from expert tutors for common foot and ankle-guided procedures.

5/ Identify and understand scope of practice, competency requirements, training needs, and medico-legal considerations for ultrasound-guided procedures.
