Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
Marnix van Holsbeeck, Joseph Introcaso. 3rd Edition, 2015

Mr. Marnix van Holsbeeck. If you wonder who started MSK ultrasound, this is one of the ground-breaking founders, publishing many papers and pushing the case for ultrasound when most of us were not even aware of it.

The 1st edition in 1991 was the first book that made the case for MSK ultrasound, a fantastic achievement. I bought the 2nd edition when it came out in 2001; at that time, and for many years it was the comprehensive reference book, correlating MRI with US, surgical and anatomical findings, and it was already describing guided procedures!

I have met Marnix a few times over the past years, and his in-depth knowledge on the subject is clearly respected by his colleagues. His understated, calm but very clear way of teaching, from the basics to the most advanced material, is reflected in this voluminous book.

The 3rd edition from 2015 has been a long time coming and is a great update, with online access to video and content and great detailed anatomy. It covers the different anatomical structures (ligament, muscle, bone etc.) in separate chapters, and then each joint, spectrum of changes, and relation to other imaging and pathology.

The only competition to this book is the reference book by Martinoli and Bianci (Ultrasound of the Musculoskeletal System). Where Martinoli is more an anatomist, providing a fantastic detailed anatomical and ultrasound description, van Holsbeeck is more a radiologist, putting more emphasis on imaging comparison and anatomy.

So, for reference, I recommend one gets both books.

The price for this hardback is around £225, but it is well worth it.
