Introduction to Ultrasound-Guided Injections of the Foot & Ankle:

This intensive practical course focuses on developing the skills and knowledge required to perform ultrasound-guided injections of the foot and ankle. It is designed for healthcare professionals new to these techniques or seeking to refine their skills and expand their injection repertoire.

The morning takes place in a clinical skills room. Delegates will learn key techniques such as in-plane, out-of-plane, and ‘drop-down’ injection techniques, along with practical tips for optimising image quality and needle visualisation. We also cover the fundamentals, including how to integrate guided injections into practice, equipment set up and medico-legal issues. Practical workshops will focus on scanning techniques, reviewing normal sono-anatomy, and identifying injection targets for each region area of the ankle and foot; anterior, posterior, lateral and medial ankle as well as mid foot and the forefoot injections. Delegates will also practise setting up for a guided procedure.

The afternoon session takes place in the state of the art cadaveric lab (part of there medical school), providing participants with an invaluable opportunity to practise the techniques in a realistic setting. This hands-on experience is ideal for building confidence, refining skills, and applying what has been learned under the close supervision of expert tutors. Delegates will benefit from access to high-quality cadavers and machines, ample practice time, and close supervision from expert tutors who provide valuable tips and guidance. Ultrasound-Guided Injections of the Foot and Ankle Learning Objectives:

1/ Understand the role of ultrasound in guiding interventions in the foot and ankle, and develop knowledge of in-plane, out-of-plane, and 'drop-down’ guided techniques.

2/ Gain hands-on experience guiding needles under ultrasound on fresh frozen full-bodied cadavers under close supervision from expert tutors.

3/ Develop awareness of procedural protocols, safety considerations, and strategies to mitigate risks during procedures, ensuring successful and safe integration of ultrasound-guided injections into clinical practice.

4/ Apply learned skills in a realistic cadaveric lab setting. Participate in hands-on exercises based on realistic case scenarios and receive individualised feedback from expert tutors for common foot and ankle-guided procedures.

5/ Identify and understand scope of practice, competency requirements, training needs, and medico-legal considerations for ultrasound-guided procedures.
